About Us
The Grafted Familia officially began as a company in 2020, but the dream began eight years prior when the founder, Iris George, worked as an adoption specialist. Because nearly all adoptive children immersed in an English-speaking environment will eventually learn English, greater emphasis was put on the other longer-lasting challenges of adoption. Consequently there is about a year long period in which parents struggle to communicate with their children and vice versa. Also, parents face cultural misunderstandings and adoptive children try to meet academic goals in a language they do not yet speak. Having a background in language, education, and adoption, Iris wanted to step in. She wanted to find ways to support parents and children during this difficult first year, and this is how The Grafted Familia began.
Who We Are
We are stay-at-home moms, nonprofit directors, teachers, community leaders and more. We are all fluent in Spanish and English, and we love using our language skills to bring families closer together.
Who We Work With
We work families. We work with parents. We work with children. We work with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, biological kids, adoptive kids, foster kids, etc. We work with anyone that plays a role in the life of a family.
Our Heart
Our heart is to strengthen families through language. We love blended families, but we also understand that the process of joining different people, from different countries, with different cultures, who speak different languages can be challenging. We exist to support families as they walk through this difficult but rewarding journey.
What Makes Us Unique?
Specialization in Adoption
Ever since our conception as a company, we have focused entirely on adoption documents from Latin America. This gives us an advantage from a general translation company, because we are familiar with not only the documents that pertain to adoption but also relevant terminology. Additionally, because we are familiar with the documents seen in adoption, we have been able to preemptively notice when documents are missing and contact you or your adoption agency, so that an early effort can be made to obtain these documents.
Document Mirroring
We do more than just translate your documents. Your documents resemble the originals as much as possible. We include logos, signatures, official stamps, etc. This makes it easy to compare and read your documents.
Translator Footnotes
This is an additional feature that goes beyond just a text-to-text translation. The final product will include footnotes of information that will help you better understand the meaning of the text. This includes meanings of abbreviations, colloquial understandings, explanations of customs, etc.
People Not Computers
All your translations will be completed by individuals who are fluent speakers of the Spanish and English languages. It is not a computer program that completes your translations. We use language resources, but you can rest assured that a person will be completing and reviewing your translations. Additionally, for all questions, you have access to your translator throughout the translation process.
Flexibility
We understand that the adoption process can be unpredictable, that documents can come in at different times in the process, and that changes can happen at the last minute. Because of this, you have access to your translator throughout the process. We will work with you to translate your documents as they come in and to be flexible with you as changes happen. We also know that traveling to meet your adoptive child can hinge on completing these translations and your 800. Because of this, we work with each family according to their circumstances and timelines, and we come up with quotes that best suit each family.
A Continual Resource
Beyond completing your translations, we want to be a post adoption language resource to you. We offer an interpretation service for when you are or your child is struggling to communicate. Upon request, we can assist you via text, phone call, or video call in order to help you and you child to communicate smoothly.
